Patrick started designing the branch house during the pandemic. With our house fully finished and no socializing in sight, he was ready to tackle another giant building project. The house will serve as a rental and as a space for visiting friends and family.
Building a porch became a season long project as Patrick decided to use salvaged field cedar from the woods to construct the railing and a curved slated roof.
Epic amounts of planer shavings. Our chickens have years of bedding!
Setting up a work bench in the living room allowed us to work on the guesthouse comfortably through the final winter of construction.
I was really excited about building the cubbies under the stairs (you can see them on the right in this photo). We used some wide oak boards and sanded them down since they wouldn't fit through the planer.

Installing the finish floor was so satisfying! The white ash came from our neighbors land-- a large tree that fell across their driveway in a winter storm. As they had plenty of firewood, they offered it to us. We milled it up and it turned into beautiful, clear grained flooring. We combined it with red oak that we milled from our forest. We felt so lucky to work with this beautiful wood!
The main floor - almost fully installed.
